Thank you for your feedback on the Colquhoun Lane naming proposal

27 November 2025

Thank you to everyone who shared their views on the commemorative naming proposal to name the unnamed lane at Barkly Square 'Colquhoun Lane' after the late Amalie Colquhoun

  • What we heard

We received 36 submissions, and the majority (60%) of feedback supported the proposed name. All submitters will be contacted directly with a formal response.

We’ve received feedback about the pronunciation of Colquhoun Lane. While pronunciation or writing is not allowed to be included on street signs according to Australian Standards, we’re creating a poster for the Barkly Square information board that will share details about Amalie Colquhoun, her contributions to our community, and a helpful pronunciation guide.

Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts and helped celebrate Ballarat’s history through place naming!

Please note: there are no properties that use this lane for their address, and the name of Barkly Square and its address will remain the same.

  • What's next

The naming proposal will be presented to Council on 10 December 2025 for a resolution to adopt the name. If adopted, it will then be lodged with Geographic Names Victoria the following week. Once the proposal is lodged, members of the public can still make a formal objection appeal directly to Geographic Names Victoria.

Objections must be in writing and meet the requirements of the Naming Rules for Places in Victoria (2022 Edition), such as concerns about:

  • Council did not consider the objections during its deliberations
  • the proposal does not reasonably conform to the naming rules.

Appeals must be sent to:

  • Registrar of Geographic Names, Geographic Names Victoria, Department of Transport and Planning, GPO BOX 2392, Melbourne, Victoria 3001 or via email to geo.names@transport.vic.gov.au.

Please note that appeals that do not respond/address one of the two points above are not considered.
