The City of Ballarat engaged the community throughout February 2026 to inform the development of the Roam Discovery Trail’s Lydiard Street pilot site, gathering insights into what locals value most about this historically significant precinct.
Through 23 survey responses, targeted stakeholder engagement, and outreach to 150 local businesses supported by broad digital reach across social media, the community expressed strong pride in Lydiard Street’s architectural integrity, cultural institutions, and heritage character.
Feedback highlighted a desire for accurate, inclusive storytelling that reflects both well‑known and under‑represented histories, along with sensitivity to the street’s visual and pedestrian experience. These insights are now guiding content refinement, cultural consultation, and design adjustments to ensure the project delivers an engaging, respectful, and authentic interpretation of Ballarat’s identity for both residents and visitors.
Help Shape Ballarat’s New Heritage Trail
The City of Ballarat is creating a new digital and physical heritage trail along Lydiard Street. The Roam Discovery Trail will feature augmented reality (AR) experiences and storytelling markers that invite locals and visitors to explore Ballarat’s rich history in a new way.
We’re seeking your input to help shape how this trail looks and feels. Your feedback will guide the design and placement of signage and ensure the trail reflects what the community loves and values about Lydiard Street.
What’s happening?
- 11 visitor markers will be installed along Lydiard Street (between Ballarat Station and Dana Street).
- QR codes on these markers will trigger digital storytelling.
- The trail will celebrate Ballarat’s heritage while offering a modern, interactive experience.
- We want to know: What matters most to you about Lydiard Street?
Pop-by one of the walking tours or information session to learn more about this new project to showcase our special Lydiard Street precinct
The primary focus of the engagement will be to determine sentiment on:
- As a community member in Ballarat - what does Lydiard Street mean to you and how do you use it in your everyday life?
- What heritage elements are important to you and how do you see these being used in the future?
- How would this project benefit our visitors and community?
- Do you have any stories or pieces of history to share with the City of Ballarat regarding this area?
