Context map

This project includes safe pedestrian and cycling access and improved amenity along the Warrenheip Gully Trail. This is stage one, of a multi-staged project. This stage, Callow Street (Barkly Street to Otway Street South) includes walking, scooting, pushing a pram and riding a bike. We are interested in your feedback on the concepts.

There are gaps in Ballarat's network of trails that link key open space, parks, playgrounds, reserves, recreational and environmental areas which do not provide safe, seamless and connected opportunities to walk, ride, or jog.

This project, in the Ballarat East area, will create a new pathway along Warrenheip Gully connecting Otway Street South to Callow Street. It will provide an improved crossing point over Main Road for trail users to connect to the Canadian Creek and the Goldfields Track.

This project is the first stage of a wider aim to provide a safe and engaging walking and cycling connection from the CBD to the Woowookarung Regional Park. Future stages will involve improvements to Pennyweight Gully/Grasstree Creek to Sparrow Ground and on to the Woowookarung Regional Park.

The project provides for safe, healthy connections for riders and walkers wishing to access Ballarat's passive and active recreational networks. It supports an active and healthy community and provides alternative transport gains through a provision of a passive transport network.

The Proposal

The draft concepts below show the intention to provide:

  • Construction of approximately 200m of new 2.5 metre wide off-road shared user pathways linking Canadian Creek Trail to Main Road, then Callow Street to existing path at Otway Street South.
  • New pedestrian crossing over Pennyweight Gully.
  • Provision of safe crossing points at intersections, in particular across Main Road.
  • Additional tree planting and landscaping along paths for shading and cooling.
  • Line marking and wayfinding.

Refer to the overview plans below or to the Document library for a detailed set of draft concept plans.
