Project Overview
We're reviewing our Community Local Law, and we want your ideas and feedback on how we can use the local law to keep our neighbourhoods and business precincts welcoming and enjoyable for everyone. Your feedback will inform the review of the current Community Local Law 2017 and the development of the Draft Community Local Law 2027.
The Community Local Law shapes everyday life in ways some people may not realise. It guides things like how the community and businesses can share public spaces, how people care for their properties and neighbourhoods, even how many pets you can have at home, and so much more.
This is an important opportunity to help shape our Draft Community Local Law to make sure it remains effective and relevant to our community and businesses for the next 10 years.
How you can be involved
During the Community Local Law review, we are looking for community members and businesses to share their ideas and feedback on how we can make local laws easier to understand, and how we can simplify our permit application process. We are also looking for any ideas, new issues or local concerns and what isn't working.
To learn more, explore the Community Local Law Ready Reckoner - it's a quick and easy way to find the key clauses as they relate to common themes.
There are a number of ways for you to be involved:
- Complete an online or printed Community and/or Business Survey
- Visit one of the community drop-in sessions at a community hub or Let's Chat Councillor Roadshow - see the dates in the timeline

Next steps
After we have all community and business feedback in this engagement stage, we will review the responses to understand our opportunities for simplification and improvement, and emerging issues and concerns. This information will be used to inform the Draft Community Local Law 2027.
A Community Engagement Summary will be developed and shared with the community and businesses to show what we heard and how it is being used, keeping the community informed as the project progresses.
To keep up to date with the Community Local Law Review project we encourage you to follow the project by clicking on the button below.
One quick question - your feedback matters!
Over the next ten years, what is one thing we should prioritise to help keep our public spaces and neighbourhood welcoming and enjoyable or easier to do business in Ballarat?
We are interested in understanding what is most important to you. Where feedback falls outside the scope of the Community Local Law we will make sure it is shared with the appropriate team or organisation (max 140 characters).
