New Road Name Proposed for Unnamed Road GLENDARUEL

The City of Ballarat intends to name an unnamed roadway that runs east from Coghills Creek Road, Glendaruel opposite Coutts Road to Fentons Road, though the last 500 metres to Fentons Road is not trafficable. The unnamed road has been unofficially known as a Part Coutts Road for emergency services in recent times.

Section of road to be renamed

Why is this necessary?

The unnamed road has been unofficially known as Part Coutts Road, however, this name is not valid and has only been assigned temporarily for use by Emergency Services and will remain in place until the official renaming is completed.

Working with the Traditional Owners

City of Ballarat is committed to reconciliation, working positively today and into the future with Dja Dja Wurrung (Traditional Owners) and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members to learn, acknowledge, and move forward together. In continuing this commitment, it is proposed that the unnamed road be named Nyaninyuk Road (prounounced Nah-nin-nook). It is deemed appropriate as the name is the Traditional name for Mt Beckworth in native Dja Dja Wurrung language. The name of the mountain translates to the mountain's back of the neck – nyani being ‘neck, nape, back of the neck’ and -nyuk being ‘his, her, its’.

Community Engagement Submissions

There was support for the name, and it has been deemed that this naming proposal will remove the potential for confusion for emergency services and other essential services. Ballarat City Council will consider the final proposed Nyaninyuk Road at its meeting on September 28th 2022 at 6.30pm in the Council Chamber, Ballarat Town Hall, 225 Sturt Street BALLARAT CENTRAL.
