Frequently Asked Questions
We have prepared answers to frequently asked questions regarding urban renewal of the La Trobe Street precinct.
The La Trobe Street Precinct presents a unique opportunity to shape Ballarat’s future and ensure its urban form is fit for purpose in the 21st century. Historically located on the city’s periphery, the precinct has long served as a hub for industrial activity. However, recent residential growth to the west has transformed its context - placing it at the geographic and demographic heart of Ballarat.
Previous strategic work has focused primarily on the former Ballarat Saleyard's site. This project builds on that foundation by expanding the study area to include surrounding land, recognising the broader potential of the precinct to support a more diverse mix of land uses.
With its proximity to services, community facilities, and transport links, the precinct is well-positioned to accommodate uses not traditionally associated with industrial areas. At the same time, the encroachment of residential development has introduced constraints, limiting opportunities for new industrial businesses and the expansion of existing ones.
